27-year-old James “Mandingo Warrior” Kirkland (27-1, 24 KO’s) is scheduled to fight Dennis Sharpe (17-7-3, 4 KOs) Friday night, in order to re-establish himself as a legitimate middleweight contender after suffering a devastating first round knockout loss to Japan’s Nobuhiro Ishida back in April of this year.
Kirkland had plans to slowly resurrect his career after serving an almost two year prison stint for weapons violations in the midst of what most viewed as a top contending and very promising career. Kirkland had 2 wins under his belt after being released, but his strategy to climb back into the ranks was foiled by Ishida.
Notable past victories include wins over Brian Vera and Joel Julio.
His opponent, Sharpe, has lost his last seven in a row and has not won a bout since May of 2004.
