Estadio Centenario, Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico — Humberto Soto (55-7-2, 32 KOs) begins his quest for money fights at junior welterweght with a ten round bout against Nicaraguan journeyman, Jose Alfaro (25-7, 22 KOs).
Soto’s stated goal is to land a bout with fellow Mexican and future Hall of Famer, Erik Morales at 140 lbs., recently vacating his WBC lightweight title to move up in weight. The former two-division world champ recently ended his informal promotional arrangement with Top Rank in order to pursue the Morales fight.
Alfaro has lost three of his last five bouts, suffering stoppage losses to Antonio DeMarco and Yoshihiro Kamegai as well as a unanimous decision loss to Erik Morales. Alfaro’s biggest win to date is a TKO 8 victory over DeMarcus Corley in 2007.
Centro de Convenciones, San Luis Potosi, San Luis Potosí, Mexico– Marco Antonio Rubio (51-5-1, 44 KOs) will face Ghana’s Mohammed Akrong (13-3, 10 KOs) in a “stay busy” fight while waiting his turn to face WBC middleweight titlist, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Rubio, who is the WBC’s #1 contender at middleweight, earned his lofty spot with an upset seventh round stoppage of Canadian prospect, David Lemieux. A well-seasoned, ll-year veteran, the resident of Torreon, Coahuila, Mexico has been in the ring with the likes of Lemieux, Kelly Pavlik, Jose Luis Zertuche, Rigoberto Alvarez, Enrique Ornelas, Kassim Ouma, Grady Brewer, Frankie Randall, and Kofi Jantuah.
The 28-year-old Akrong, has never fought outside of Africa and has never competed above the club level.
Foro Promo Casa, Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico — Omar Chavez (26-0-1, 19 KOs) and Jorge Paez Jr. (28-4-1, 17 KOs) share a bill, with a match-up of the second-generation welterweights on the horizon, should they get by their overmatched opposition this Saturday.
Chavez will be taking on Chihuahua’s Alberto Martinez (15-1, 10 KOs) who, despite his winning record, has faced a very low level of opposition with a combined 24-74-3 record.
Paez will face Tijuana’s Rodrigo Juarez (15-13-1, 11 KOs), a loser of seven of his last eight bouts.
