The WBC released a statement today indicating they have banned heavyweight Dereck Chisora indefinitely due to his well publicized behavior before, during and after his recent title bout loss to WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko.
Among other things, Chisora slapped Klitschko during the weigh in for the bout, spat water into Wladimir Klitschko’s face immediately before the fight and tussled with David Haye at the post fight press conference in one of the most memorable scenes in recent boxing history.
The WBC said they would both impose a “serious fine” as well as demand that Chisora seek “anger management medical treatment” before reconsidering his status to fight again for a WBC title. In addition, Chisora will be immediately pulled from the WBC heavyweight rankings.
Rest assured, Chisora will not be pulled from our own rankings unless he actually does something in the ring to fall out of the top twenty. While actions like these are well within the rights of the WBC as an organization, events like this show exactly why a fair and impartial boxing rankings system is so vital to the sport. What Derek Chisora does inside the ring should determine how he ranks against his peers. What he does outside of it should be governed elsewhere.
