Germany’s “Killer Queen” Susi Kentikian (30-2, 16 KO’s, 1 NC) started off 2013 in the winners circle, defeating Sanae Jah (7-1, 2 KO’s) on the Sturm-Soliman under card in Dusseldorf, Germany Friday night. The win elevates Kentikian back to world champion status as the holder of the interim WBA flyweight title.
Kentikian had a less than stellar year in 2012, suffering back to back questionable losses that cost her all three of her world flyweight championships and an undefeated record. In May, she had dropped the WIBF and WBO straps to Melissa McMorrow by 10 round decision; she had held those titles since 2007 and 2009 respectively. Following that bout, Kentikian put her remaining WBA title, which she has also held since 2007, on the line in December against Carina Moreno and again, lost a close 10 round decision. Sanae Jah posed little threat as a comeback opponent. A former Belgium champion and current holder of the WBC International flyweight title, Jah’s record is padded with opponents holding far less than .500 records. In fact prior to Friday’s bout, the best record any of her opponents possessed was 8-10-2. Kentikian worked her way to a unanimous decision, wining by scores of 99-90½, 98-93, 97½-92.
The women’s WBC middleweight title remains vacant. Saturday night at “Fight Night 15: the Rematch” in Bermuda, WBA champion Teresa Perozzi (9-4-3, 1 KO) and WIBA titlist Tori Nelson (6-0-3, 0 KO’s) once again fought to a 10 round draw. The bout was just as entertaining as the first, with both fighters visiting the canvas in the third round, Perozzi appearing to be the more shaken. The two last met in October for the vacant title as well as Perozzi’s WBA strap, and fought to a majority draw. This time the scoring was split: 96-95 for Perozzi, 97-94 for Nelson and 95-95 even. No word on if the two boxers are planning a third go around.
In Mexico, IBF bantamweight champion Yazmin Rivas (27-7, 9 KO’s) notched her sixth consecutive win and retained her title with a 10 round split decision over former WBC silver champ, Maria Villalobos (12-9-1, 5 KO’s). Rivas has held the IBF title since October of 2011 when she defeated then unbeaten fighter Susie Ramadan. Prior to winning the title, Rivas had a victory over Gabriela Gonzalez (RTD 10), preceded by four bouts that resulted in no-contests. For Villalobos, who has also held the Mexican super bantamweight title, this was her fourth straight loss, all four being title bouts.
In the only State-side action of the weekend, Amanda Crespin (7-4-1, 2 KO’s) gave Brenda Gonzalez (2-1, 1 KO) her first loss via 4 round decision in New Mexico.
