Earlier today, it was unfortunately announced that the sweet science had lost another one of their own, as it was announced that trainer Porfirio “Rudy” Perez has passed away after an 18-month battle with cancer, family members stated. Rudy was most recognized for training Mexican legend, Marco Antonio Barrera, and former champions such as Israel Vazquez, Marcos Maidana, Rudy Lopez, and Jorge Linares, among plenty of others.
Perez was a relatively quiet man to the sport, but those in boxing knew him to be just as great a person outside of the ring, as he was when he was training fighters. Espinoza Boxing Club founder Frank Espinoza, whom worked closely with Perez for several years, stated: “My heart goes out to the Perez Family, they are in our thoughts and prayers. He(Rudy) was a great man not only in boxing but as a person as well.” Meanwhile, Israel Vazquez, who trained under Perez’ tutelage, offered: “Thank you for everything, you will always be a huge part of my life. Rest peacefully to the great, Rudy Perez.” Those same thoughts were repeatedly echoed today by many.
