Germany’s “Killer Queen” saw action this past weekend. Susi Kentikian (31-2, 16 KO’s) evened the score against Carina Moreno (23-6), working her way to a unanimous 10 round decision and regaining the WBA world flyweight title in Dortmund Saturday night. Scores of the bout were 96-94 and 97-93 twice.
Kentikian, a Germany based Armenian, was undefeated at 29-0 and held three world titles moving into 2012. She held the WBA and WIBF titles since 2007 and the picked up the WBO strap in 2009. Over a five year span, she would make a total of 15 title defenses, defeating the likes of Elena Reid, Ana Arrazola, Arely Mucino, Nadia Raoui, and Julia Sahin to name a few.
She hit a stumbling block in 2012, losing the WBO and WIBF titles in May to Melissa McMorrow. In December she faced Moreno for the first time, losing for the second consecutive time and surrendering the WBA title. She returned to winning for in February of this year, winning a 10 round contest over Sanae Jah and taking the interim WBA flyweight strap setting up the rematch with Moreno.
In 2009, Carina Moreno had a 21-1 record and held the WBC minimum-weight title before losing to Anabel Ortiz after which she was inactive for all of 2010. She returned in 2011 and went 1-3 including world title bout losses to Yesica Bopp and Irma Sanchez before her world title win over Kentikian, then taking Saturdays bout with no fights in between. Moreno also had a brief stint as the WIBF minimum-weight champion in 2008.
In Argentina, IBF super flyweight champion Debora Dionicius (13-0, 4 KO’s) kept her undefeated record intact and retained her world title, defeating Marisa Portillo (13-8-2, 2 KO’s) over 10 rounds. It was the second defense for Dionicius, who won the vacant belt in November with a ten round decision over Michelle Preston and made her first successful defense in April, winning a ten rounder over Gabriela Bouvier. This was Portillo’s second consecutive loss and her fifth failing attempt at a world title. She’s never won a ten round contest.
In non-title action, former WBA bantamweight champion Janeth Perez (18-2-2, 4 KO’s) won a ten round decision over Maria Villalobos (12-10-1, 5 KO’s) in Mexico. Perez was coming off back to back losses to Irma Garcia that cost her WBA title. Villalobos, a former WBC silver super bantamweight titlist has now lost five in a row.
Coming up this Saturday, Mariana Juarez (37-7-3, 16 KO’s) seeks revenge against Riyo Togo (10-4-1, 9 KO’s) in Mexico. Juarez, a former world flyweight champion, was victim of a huge upset in April when Togo stopped her in the first round in Mexico City, winning the vacant WBC International super flyweight title. It was a busy fight from the start with Juarez seeming to have the edge, but the bout was waved off after a left hook dropped “La Barbie” and she rose on unsteady legs. Prior to that bout, Juarez hadn’t been stopped since 2005. Juarez-Togo I was covered by the Boxing Tribune HERE.
Also on Saturday, middleweights Christina Hammer (14-0, 7 KO’s) and Mikaela Lauren (19-2, 7 KO’s) meet in a scheduled 10 round contest for Hammer’s WBF and WBO middleweight titles. The bout is an undercard attraction on a card headlined by Robert Stieglitz defending the WBO super middleweight title against Yuzo Kiyota.
Of course, women’s boxing wouldn’t be complete without world title action in Argentina, where Marcela Acuna (38-6-1, 17 KO’s) meets Melissa Hernandez (18-4-3, 6 KO’s) for the vacant interim WBO featherweight title.
