Scottish lightweight Ricky Burns (36-2-1, 11 KO’s) is all healed and ready to go. The WBO lightweight champion is set to meet mandatory challenger, Terence Crawford (22-0, 16 KO’s) on March 1st at the Scottish Exhibition Centre in Glasgow, Scotland.
This will be Burns’ first fight back after a highly controversial draw against Raymundo Beltran at the same venue this past September. Even the Scottish fans were surprised at the outcome, as it seemed Beltran had the fight locked up, but had to settle for a split draw, a decision some called the biggest robbery of 2013. Prior to facing Beltran, the reigning champ scored a ninth round stoppage over then undefeated Jose A Gonzalez, who retired between rounds citing an injured wrist. Burns was behind on all cards when the fight was stopped.
“I know my jaw’s OK. I just can’t wait to climb back through those ropes” Burns told BBC Scotland. His jaw will be tested when he faces Crawford, the undefeated NABO lightweight titleholder who’s scored 16 of his 22 victories inside the distance. The Omaha, Nebraska native fought three times in 2013, the last bout being a 10 round shutout over then undefeated Andrey Klimov in October.
