After nearly two years out of the ring, former world lightweight champion Michael “The Great” Katsidis (28-6, 23 KO’s) makes his ring return Friday night as the headlining attraction at Rumours International in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia. In the 10 round main event, he will face Eddy Comaro (27-17-5, 11 KO’s) of Indonesia.
Katsidis held the WBO lightweight title from 2007 to 2008 and again from 2009-2010 as the interim belt holder. His first reign was ended when Joel Casamayor stopped him in 10 rounds, but after taking a second loss to Juan Diaz for the IBO strap, he came back to win the WBO Asia Pacific lightweight title and two fights later, regain the interim WBO title. He saw a steady downward slide in his career starting in 2010, losing four of five bouts including world title fights against Juan Manuel Marquez, Robert Guerrero, and Ricky Burns. He retired after a close majority decision loss to Albert Mensah in 2012.
Reuniting with trainer Brendon Smith, he knows this bout will directly affect where his career goes. He told thechronicle.com, “How I go in this fight will be telling for where I go with my career from here…I feel good. I’m very confident. This is an ideal fight for me. Comaro is tough enough to test me and I will get a true indication against him of where I’m at.”
Comaro’s career has been based in Indonesia and Thailand. He’s fought numerous times in regional title bouts and has won on two occasions but in recent years he’s lost far more than he’s won; since 2010 he’s gone 5-12-1.
