Light middleweight Paola Gabriela Casalinuovo (11-0, 11 KO’s) remained undefeated and kept her perfect knockout ratio in tact with a seventh round stoppage of Yajaira Hernandez (15-6, 3 KO’s) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, winning the vacant IBF light middleweight title. Hernandez scored a knockdown in the sixth round, but Casalinuovo returned the favor three times, dropping her opponent two times in the sixth and once in the seventh frame. In the closing seconds of the seventh round Casalinuovo landed a two punch combination that staggered Hernandez, prompting referee Mario Gonzalez to stop the bout. Hernandez was visibly upset by the end result.
This is the first world title for Casalinuovo, who originally turned pro in 2000 but was inactive after fighting in September of 2006. It was more than seven years before she resumed her career last December at 39 years old and has since had two bouts, this weekends included. This was the first time she’s had to fight past the second round. Hernandez had challenged for world titles a total of six times between the junior middle, middle, and super-middleweight divisions but has lost every time.
Gabriela Bouvier (12-4-1, 2 KO’s) made the first defense of the IBF flyweight title against Carolina Alvarez (11-5-2) in Uruguay, retaining the belt with a 10 round decision. Bouvier won the vacant strap in her last bout, defeating Florencia Canteros over 10 rounds. She had been unsuccessful in three prior tries at world championships, but won the WBC Latino flyweight title for a short period in 2012. Alvarez has now failed in five title bouts.
The WIBF light welterweight champion Marie Riederer (15-1-1, 10 KO’s) took part in a non-title bout in Germany, stopping Veronika Hornyak (4-5) in the first round, putting Hornyak on a four fight, four knockout losing streak. Riederer won the world title in 2012 and has made one defense last year. She’s unbeaten in her last 11 contests.
Also in non-title action, WBF minimum-weight champion Anne Sophie Da Costa (17-0, 7 KO’s) remained undefeated with an eight round decision over Maria Rosa Tabbuso (13-7-2, 3 KO’s) in France. In her three bouts since winning the title in 2012 she’s made just one defense. The loss puts Tabbuso on a three fight losing streak.
Another world minimum-weight title holder fought in a non-title contest in Mexico. Anabel Ortiz (14-3, 2 KO’s), the WBA minimum-weight champion, won a shut out 10 round decision over Ivoon Rosas in Cancun. Ortiz is a former WBC world champion in the same weight class, and has made one defense of her current title. Rosas came into this bout on a three fight winning streak.
