Monday night at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan Naoko Fujioka (12-0,
6 KO’s) retained both her undefeated record and the WBA super flyweight championship when she comfortably out-pointed Tomoko Kawanishi (9-2, 4 KO’s) over 10 rounds. Fujioka has held a title most of her young career; in her fourth pro outing she won the OPBF female minimum-weight title followed two bouts later with win for the WBC minimum-weight belt, stopping Anabel Ortiz inside eight rounds. With just one title defense in 2012, she moved up to super flyweight in 2013 and defeated the more experienced Naoko Yamaguchi to win the WBA super flyweight title. This week’s victory was her first defense. Kawanishi is the OPBF female super flyweight title-holder, with two successful defenses prior to this contest. In 2012 she lost in a try for the OPBF bantamweight belt to Riyo Togo.
Australia’s Shannon O’Connell (10-3, 5 KO’s) won the vacant WIBA super bantamweight championship with a 10 round decision over the less experienced Bronwyn Wylie (3-3) at Grand Star Receptions in Altona North, Victoria. This is the second world title for the new champion, who held the WBF featherweight belt last year and is still recognized as the Australia – Queensland State featherweight title holder. Wylie last fought in 2011, losing to Diana Prazak in a world title contest.
Former world flyweight champion Arely Mucino (20-2-2, 10 KO’s) defeated Suri Tapia (7-4, 2 KO’s) in a 10 round contest in Mexico. Mucino is the former IBF and interim WBA flyweight champion, last holding a title in 2012. She lost the IBF title to Ava Knight in 2011 and lost again to Mariana Juarez in 2012 in a contest for the WBC flyweight belt. Tapia has now lost three straight bouts.
