Palenque de la Feria, Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico– Ramon Alvarez (20-4-2, 12 KOs), older brother of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez beat Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.’s younger brother, Omar Chavez (32-3-1, 22 KOs) via easier-than-expect ten round unanimous decision Saturday night by scores of 96-94, 96-94, and 98-92. The Boxing Tribune scored the bout 97-93, also for Alvarez.
For the bout he had been openly pursuing for the better of a year, Chavez came out slow, stiff, and seemingly gassed from the second round forward. He would be beat to the punch consistently throughout the evening by Alvarez, who was stealing round after round on pure activity.
Alvarez showed up as the fighter most expected– slow, predictable, flat-footed, and without much power. He was also fighting as a junior middleweight– at least one full weight class above where he should be. But on Saturday, it was enough to just throw fists and have the presence of mind not to walk into anything heavy.
Chavez, down on all of the scorecards and spurred on by the frantic shouts of his father at ringside, made a decent rally in the last two rounds, but he had no energy to truly go for the kill. Even by winning the ninth and tenth, Chavez came well short of victory.
Along with the family vs. family pride of vanquishing a Chavez, Alvarez also picked up the WBO’s NABO junior middleweight title from Chavez.
