Veteran heavyweight spoiler Tony Thompson (39-5, 26 KOs) and Cuban Olympic gold medalist Odlanier Solis (20-2, 13 KOs) will meet in a rematch on October 18 in Dusseldorf, Germany.
Thompson won their first bout in March via split decision and, while the contest was a relatively close affair, there doesn’t seem to be much of a reason for a rematch, other than to give Solis, who is signed with lead promoter Ahmet Oner’s company, a second chance at winning this crossroads bout.
Up until now, the 34-year-old Solis’ career has been a disappointment, plagued by weight issues and general in-ring indifference. Most agree that the tools are there to be a legitimate heavyweight contender, but Solis is definitely running out of “last” chances.
Thompson, who will be celebrating his 43rd birthday on fight night, experienced a bit of a career rebirth in recent years after stopping UK prospect David Price on two separate occasions in 2013. He has since gone 1-2 on the Euro-circuit, with the win over Solis sandwiched between losses to Kubrat Pulev and Carlos Takam.
