Cuban heavyweight contender, Luis Ortiz, tested positive for the anabolic steroid nandrolone following his first round knockout of Lateef Kayode on September 11.
Ortiz, who won the vacant interim WBA heavyweight belt that evening, faces a fine and suspension pending a Nevada State Athletic Commission hearing as well as the loss of the belt and top contender status by the WBA. The official result of the bout could also go from KO 1 to no contest.
In response, Team Ortiz reportedly sent Boxingscene.com a personal lab report dated October 7 (almost a full month after the day of the fight) where Ortiz had tested negative for all banned substances.
“Luis Ortiz [is] even willing to get tested on a Lie Detector to clear his image as a clean athlete,” the accompanying statement said. “Luis Ortiz does not need to use stimulants to win his fights.”
KO victim, Kayode would issue the following statement, also through Boxingscene: “I should be given that belt — or the chance to win it. No one else has the right to be named champion. I was honest. He was not, and I should be rewarded. I felt his power and now I know why he has this power. It did not belong to him. Thank you God.”
