From the WBC:
“The WBC is very happy to announce the cancellation of the purse bid for the fight between WBC/WBA super lightweight world champion Danny “Swift” Garcia of the United States and WBC mandatory challenger Viktor Postol of Ukraine. Both parties have reached an agreement, the specific details of which will be announced in the near future.”
From WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman: “I am extremely satisfied with the good faith agreement reached by the parties involved which will generate very good opportunities for the fighters, which is the top priority for all of us involved in this great sport.”
Of course, there’s no reason for fight fans to really celebrate today’s announcement as Postol (26-0, 11 KOs) is on top of nobody’s wish list as an ideal opponent for WBC/WBA titlist Danny Garcia (29-0, 17 KOs).
All this means is that, in a division stacked with main stage talent, Garcia is fighting a relatively unknown fighter in what should be a token defense. In many ways it will be the ideal final bout to a frustrating 2014 that saw Garcia win a controversial decision against Mauricio Herrera in an ill-conceived “homecoming” card in Puerto Rico and then take even more heat for a non-title bout against undersized and unqualified Rod Salka.
Postol, to be fair, is not a bad fighter and has scored solid wins over Selcuk Aydin and Henry Lundy. It’s just that he doesn’t represent the type of marquee showdown fans were expecting from Garcia at this point.
A date and venue will be announced.
It should also be noted that the WBC has recently announced deals that were not actually confirmed, such as their announcement that Bermane Stiverne and Deontay Wilder had come to terms when they had not.
