It appears that one of the more intriguing bouts on a boxing-heavy December 13 won’t be taking place after all.
According to Boxingscene, WBO junior middleweight champ Demetrius Andrade (21-0, 14KOs) will not be defending his title against Jermell Charlo (24-0, 11KOs) as the co-feature to the Showtime Amir Khan-Devon Alexander main event at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Financial issues were pegged as the cause of the cancellation, but there’s also the issue of Andrade’s wife, who will give birth around the scheduled date of the fight.
There is talk about the bout being pushed back to a date in mid-January, but there are no details yet regarding when or if the bout gets re-scheduled.
Showtime now falls back on a deep undercard for that evening to make up the slack. Keith Thurman vs. Leonard Bundu is on the card and so are bouts featuring former world champions Abner Mares, Victor Ortiz and Beibut Shumenov.
