The Boxing Tribune has learned that two undercard bouts are close to being finalized for the December 13 Timothy Bradley-Diego Chaves card at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas.
First, a key junior welterweight clash is close to being finalized between veteran battler Mauricio Herrera (21-4, 7 KOs) and 22-year-old prospect Jose Benavidez Jr. (21-0, 15 KOs) for Herrera’s interim WBA junior welterweight title.
It should be noted that Herrera is a Golden Boy fighter featured on this Top Rank card, but that he is also being brought in as a sacrificial lamb to a well-regarded future star. Of course, Herrera was also used in that role against Danny Garcia earlier this year in Puerto Rico and most feel he deserved the victory over the two-belt champ.
Also close to being finalized is the much-reported bout for the WBO middleweight title vacated by Peter Quillin. In the span of about a month, no. 1 contender Matt Korobov (24-0, 14 KOs) has been expecting to face Billy Joe Saunders, then Demetrius Andrade, then Saunders again, and finally Ireland’s Andy Lee (33-2, 23 KOs).
The deal between Korobov and Lee is reportedly close to being finalized.
