Green vs. Jones (2009)
“We don’t make excuses, it was a great performance by Danny.” –Roy Jones Jr.
‘‘He’s one of the greatest fighters of all time and the opportunity to fight him in Australia, thanks Roy Jones Jr.—He’s a bloody legend” —Danny Green
This one was a true shocker and was the very essence of a ring mugging. It was sudden, merciless, and most notably, a huge upset. It also cut to the bone of Roy Jones Jr’s fans because they well knew this would never have happened 5 years back.
Australia’s heavy-handed Danny Green (27-3) took down a boxing legend as he stopped superstar Roy Jones Jr (54-5 coming in) in just two minutes at Acer Arena in Sidney.
Making the first defense of his IBO cruiserweight world title, the 36-year-old Green floored Jones with a big right hand to the head after one minute. Sensing the quick kill, Green swarmed all over Jones and backed up the great fighter that suddenly looked all of his 40 years. Several unanswered punches prompted English referee Howard John Foster to stop the assault after just 122 seconds.
It was painfully clear that Roy’s former style of fighting was only suited for the ‘younger’ and athletic version of Roy Jones Jr. But now, there simply was no way that his prior fast, elusive and unorthodox style would allow an ‘aging’ Roy to be successful. Boxers that usually rely on speed or power alone usually don’t do well once they start aging with the notable exception of George Foreman who actually became a more patient boxer as he got older. Against Danny Green, Roy had picked a savvy and strong puncher and it was a bad mistake.
