Three Great on Paper Boxers

There are the all-time greats. Those undisputed champions who’s dominance admits no question. Then, there are those who “on paper” look great but who may not even cast a shadow of a doubt.

While we all know who the first are, it’s rather more interesting to flesh out which fighters may be nothing more than hot-air filled balloons, simply because they’ve never been really challenged by anyone worth speaking about.

Let’s take a look at three:

Deontay Wilder: Perhaps you may agree, that a true heavyweight champion has been a long time coming. The golden days of the glory of boxing may be long gone, but some people believe Wilder gives a glimmer of hope. Maybe the name Bermane Stiverne rings a bell? No, well Wilder defeated him for the WBC championship and celebrated the win with the full pomposity of having won over Ali. Perhaps he wasn’t privy to the fact that Stiverne was, like Wilder, nothing to boast about. In fact, Wilder hasn’t really fought anyone of importance and most likely he won’t, until of course his promoters are ready to slaugther their golden cow.

Adonis Stevenson: The current WBC champion won by defeating Andre Fonfara (well, it was more like Fonfara’s corner threw in the towel). But, who is Fonfara anyway? To his credit, he’s someone who beat Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., but apart from him there’s nothing much too tell as is the case for Stevenson, a fighter who only seems to fight in Montreal, Canada, which is to say the only place where he can sell tickets.

Zou Shiming: There’s no disputing China is on course of bringing back the glory days of boxing. After all, when you have billions of people, there’s bound to be one shining star among them. This is true for any sport and leagues such as FIFA know it, which is why they’ve been sinking their fangs into the country like blood-thirsty vampires. But, I digress. Let’s get back to the issue at hand. Who is Zou Shiming? The two-time Olympic gold winner on the surface looks good. But, scratch a little bit below and you’ll find a fighter who may not be cut out to be a boxing great. Not, at least, if the boxing powers that be have it their way. If you expect Shiming to step into the ring with fighters like Filipino great Donnie Nietes any time soon, you might end up holding your breath for a long, long time.
