The two-weight world champion, Andre Ward has stated that he would consider moving up to the heavyweight category with the intention of securing a bout against the world champion Anthony Joshua. The rematch between Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev on Saturday extended the unbeaten run of the American after a stoppage not only ensured an effortless victory, but also ensured he retained his world light-heavyweight titles in Las Vegas to improve his sportsbetting betting odds.
The 33-year old America boxer has by now improved from the super-middleweight category, which has given him the confidence to target the top division. Ward has shown some profound interest to step into the ring with the IBF heavyweight and WBA ‘super’ champion. He confidently said that he has always had the potential to knockout giants one after the other, just as he has always done before. However, the heavyweight division has remained one of his biggest dreams.
According to Ward, stepping into the new category means that he has to fight against the right opponent, but he is still open for options. Furthermore, he added that his trainer, Virgil Hunter, has constantly pushed him by raising the bar high, which stands out as the essence of the entire team. He praised his trainer for drilling the idea that he could secure a bout against Anthony Joshua. Even though many people may not support his opinion, the American boxer seems ready to elevate his career goals.
The idea of setting up a fight between Joshua and Ward first came from Hunter who was contented that his trainee possesses all the necessary qualities to triumph over the British knockout expert. Ward is one of the few boxers who have taken such a leap; however, the renowned Roy Jones Jr left boxing fans in awe after defeating John Ruz to be crowned the champion of the WBA heavyweight division. That was his first professional bout in the category.
Hunter expressed his sentiments saying that size rarely matters in boxing because an opponent who has mastered his personal attributes and their characteristics can win against such opponents. He added that boxers should focus on pointing out a single element, which opens up a competitive edge against big opponents. Taking such chances makes it a competitive fight for both opponents because of the prior preparation.
Just to put all matters into perspective, Hunter clearly said that he would like to see Andre Ward in the ring with the renowned Anthony Joshua and vehemently added that he has never had such a strong faith in his trainee. He says that the fight would be very interesting, and even more jubilant if Ward outboxes Anthony Joshua.
Hunter went ahead to comment on the fighting prowess of Joshua by saying that the British boxer is a good kid who has a fighting spirit. He also admitted to knowing Joshua so well, especially as one of the greatest and most influential heavyweight champion. His unique styles make fights memorable; meaning a scheduled fight between them will be something to look forward to without hesitation.
