Mayweather vs McGregor Not the First MMA vs Boxing Match in History

MMA and Boxing are two sports that are rarely compared despite bearing one or two similarities. The Floyd Mayweather/Conor McGregor fight has given both sports a boost, primarily because McGregor and Floyd are the top of their respective fields. Interestingly enough, the Floyd Mayweather VS Conor McGregor boxing odds do not look too good for McGregor.

No one expects this to be a close fight. But everyone cannot help but get excited about the match. Most people are primarily curious to see how well McGregor will do in the ring. The MMA fighter is supposed to be an amazing striker in the UFC.

However, he has an uphill task translating his impressive striking ability into his newly acquired boxing skills. Floyd has spent years mastering his craft. He is unrivaled in the arena of boxing. So logically speaking, there is no way he can lose.

Those people that are quick to dismiss this fight for its silliness do not realize that the Floyd/McGregor fight isn’t the first of its kind. Boxing super stars have spent the last several decades clashing against their counterparts in other physical sports.

Some people won’t even remember the fight Ali had with Inoki in 1976. Inoki was Japan’s biggest pro wrestler and Ali agreed to fight him because of the money that was on offer. The fight was a farce. Inoki barely threw a punch before Ali put him down. Inoki didn’t stand a chance. But one assumes the potential for the fight had fans buzzing for weeks before.

A more interesting match was the one between Art Jimmerson and Royce Gracie. Art was a national Golden Gloves champion at the time and he decided that fighting an MMA star on a winning streak would boost his popularity.

Unlike Floyd Mayweather, Art decided to take his fight to the MMA cage and lost miserably. It wasn’t even a challenge; Art clearly stood no chance.

Maybe Mercer learned from Art because when the heavyweight boxing champion decided to face Sylvia, he wanted a boxing match instead of an MMA fight. However, Mercer failed to get the necessary permission for the fight and that forced him to face the UFC heavyweight champ in an MMA Cage.

Of course, Mercer was still confident in his abilities because Sylvia had promised that the fight would only be settled with punches. Mercer was determined to get his boxing match, even if it was in a cage. Sylvia agreed to these terms, broke them almost immediately and then lost the fight. That one was a surprise.

Kimbo Slice was a little different. Before he tried his hand at MMA, he was passing the time by fighting in back alleys. His fans were excited when he went into MMA and eventually faced off against a middleweight fighter by the names of Green. It came as a surprise when he actually won.

When it comes to the McGregor fight, it is hardly surprising that Floyd Mayweather refused to fight McGregor in the MMA. He knows he wouldn’t stand a chance. McGregor is definitely brave for facing Floyd on his turf. But like most previous MMA vs Boxing matches have proven, McGregor will most likely regret his decision.

Many people said McGregor wouldn’t even land a punch. I would love to see how well Mayweather would do in the octagon.
