Women’s world title action kicked off Thursday night in California. Crystal Morales (8-9-1, 1 KO) evened the score against Rhonda Luna (17-3-2, 2 KO’s), defeating her over 10 rounds and winning the vacant IFBA lightweight title. After suffering 3 consecutive losses in 2007, Morales was inactive for five years and returned in 2012 for one bout, she is now 2-2 since her return. Luna, a former title holder in the featherweight and super featherweight divisions, beat Morales by six round decision in June. Prior to the pair of bouts with Morales, she was inactive for all of 2012.
In South Korea, three women’s bouts headlined a card in Wolmido, Icheon. The interim WBA super featherweight title was won by undefeated Hyun-Mi Choi (8-0-1, 2 KO’s) when she moved up in weight and defeated former three division title holder Fujin Raika (25-8-1, 10 KO’s) by 10 round decision. Choi previously held the WBA featherweight belt, now owned by Ogdeilis Suarez as of last week. Raika held belts in the featherweight, light weight and light welterweight divisions.
In the co-feature bouts, Hye-Soo Park (3-6-1, 1 KO) won the vacant PABA super flyweight title, stopping Airada Sithsonram (2-1) in the fifth round, and former IFBA minimum weight champion Dan-Bi Kim (8-2-1, 2 KO’s) defeated Yokfah Sutkhrusin (0-4) over 10 rounds.
On a Broadway Boxing card in New York, Sonya Lamonakis (8-1, 1 KO) scored her third victory over Tanzee Daniel (4-3-1, 1 KO), outpointing her over six rounds. Daniel is now 0-3-1 in her last four outings after starting off with a 4-0 tally. Lamonakis was coming off a decision loss in April.
In Argentina, Claudia Lopez (23-7, 6 KO’s) stopped Diana Ayala (14-10-4, 9 KO’s) in the fourth round to win the vacant IBF super featherweight title. This is the second title reign for Lopez in this division; she’s also held the WBA feather title. Ayala has now had seven title opportunities, and has lost them all.
Arely Valente (12-1, 6 KO’s) won a ten round decision over Yesenia Gomez (6-3, 3 KO’s) in Mexico to reclaim the WBC youth flyweight title. The two fought in March, with Gomez taking the title and dealing Valente her first professional defeat. Gomez made one defense in between bouts with Valente: a first round TKO over Blanca Diaz.
Also on the card, Celina Salazar (5-1-2, 1 KO) scored a 10 round decision over former WBO and IBA super bantamweight champion Ana Julaton (12-4-1, 2 KO’s). Salazar was coming off her first loss in September to Melinda Cooper.
South Korea also capped off the weekend of world title bouts in Seoul. Undefeated WBO minimum weight champion Su-Yun Hong (9-0, 5 KO’s) made a successful second defense of the title by taking a 10 round decision over Mari Ando (10-6, 5 KO’s). Hong briefly held the WIBA light flyweight title before dropping down in weight, while Ando previously held the WBA atom weight title before moving up in weight for this bout. Ando has now lost three of her last four bouts.
