Tonight the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, New York, plays host to a Golden Boy Promotions card headlined by the return of former welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KOs). Opposite Ortiz in the nights main event will be Brooklyn product Luis Collazo (34-5, 17 KOs).
The “Big Apple” was well represented in the non-televised portion of the event; which was stacked with talent.
In the first fight of the evening Brooklyn’s Rafael Vazquez improved to (10-1, 8 KOs) by knocking out Bradley Patraw (10-7, 5 KOs), 1:20 seconds into round 1 of their featherweight battle. Vazquez floored Patraw twice in route to the victory.
Junior welterweight Zachary Ochoa (6-0, 3 KOs) won a unanimous decision over Jose Valderrama (3-7, (3 KOs). Ochoa pressed the action throughout the 4 round bout and appeared to have scored a knockdown in round 3, which instead was ruled a slip.
In a 130-pound contest, Heavy underdog Victor Sanchez (5-8-2, 2 KOs) gave rising super featherweight prospect Emmanuel Gonzalez (14-0, 7 KOs) all that he could handle before losing by unanimous decision. For 4 rounds Sanchez applied pressure to the taller Gonzalez, who in round 5 began to do a better job of keeping Sanchez at the end of his power shots. In round 7, Sanchez began to once again press Gonzalez who used his jab to keep the gutsy Texan at bay. The action intensified in round 8 after Sanchez suffered a point deduction for using his elbow.
2012 Olympian Marcus Browne (9-0, 7 KOs) remained undefeated by beating an overweight and out-matched Kentrell Claiborne (4-9, 3 KOs) by unanimous decision. The fight was supposed to be fought at the light heavyweight limit, but turned into a cruiserweight encounter when Claiborne tipped the scales at 180-pounds. It looked as if the bout would end early as Browne landed his power shots to the head and body of Claiborne seemingly at will. Browne’s left hook continued to find its target throughout the fight, but his punches didn’t have the same effect they did against opponents at 175-pounds.
