Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KOs) will return to the ring in his hometown of Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico on January 29th against veteran journeyman, Billy Lyell (22-8, 4 KOs).
Chavez Jr. was to have returned to the ring late last year, against rumored foes ranging from Miguel Cotto to Pawel Wolak, but reported illness stopped plans for a 2010 follow up to the marquee win of his career against John Duddy in June.
Provided he gets by Lyell, Chavez Jr. could possibly face WBC interim middleweight champ, Sebastian Zbik (30-0, 10 KO’s) in May.
Lyell, in his last fight, is coming off a UD 8 win against 13-24-4, Martinus Clay. Prior to that, in his other 2010 appearance, he was stopped in 10 by Sebastian Sylvester in Germany during a challenge for Sylvester’s IBF middleweight title.
