WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (48-7, 42 KOs) will make the first defense of the title he won in April, on the undercard of Paul Williams’ comeback fight on HBO. Lightly-regarded Tomas Villa (23-7-4, 14 KOs) will be the opponent for Gonzalez. This bout is scheduled for 12 rounds, and will be held at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Saturday July 9.
Gonzalez, the former bantamweight titlist, has spent the last 2 years re-building after losing his jr. featherweight title bid to Toshiaki Nishioka in 2009. Gonzalez went to Japan in April and upset Hozumi Hasegawa to take his WBC featherweight strap.
Villa lacks any real notable wins on his resume, but has challenged Rogers Mtagwa and Mikey Garcia, losing by knockout in each fight. Last June, Villa upset unpolished prospect, Salvador Sanchez Jr., taking an 8-round unanimous decision victory over the nephew of Mexican great, Salvador Sanchez Sr.
