Gimnasio German Evers, Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico–
Fernando Montiel (47-4-2, 37 KOs) fought as well as necessary to defeat Indonesian journeyman, Angky Angkota (25-7, 14 KOs) in front of a partisan crowd in Montiel’s home state of Sinaloa.
For most of the fight, Montiel fought backing up, choosing to counter an Angkota who was coming forward, but not landing anything of note. The three-division world titlist worked upstairs and downstairs at his own pace, picking his shots and conserving energy.
Montiel’s decision to become a retreating counter-puncher in his last couple of fights has led some to question the legs and overall sharpness of the 32-year-old fighter, but “Cochulito” would close Saturday’s fight big with an offensive surge in the ninth that dropped Angkota and led to the fight being waved off.
Angkota, who was beaten in 2010 and 2011 by Jorge Arce, is now 0-3 in Mexico.
