The historic Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ will play host on Saturday, May 18th to a Light Welterweight Championship clash as Golden Boy Promotions sends their newly signed IBF-crowned Lamont Peterson in to battle his Argentinian stablemate and knockout artist Lucas Matthysse. The televised undercard portion of the event will feature a rescheduled match between Devon Alexander, who’s squaring off against the UK’s very own Kell Brook in a 147 lb. showdown. Showtime Sports will broadcast both fights.
Peterson (31-1-1, 16 KO’s) is coming off an 8th round TKO over Kendall Holt in Washington, D.C. which took place February 22nd and headlined ESPN’s Friday Night Fights. Meanwhile, Matthysse (33-2, 31 KO’s), who holds the WBC’s Interim 140 lb. belt, is coming off a 1st round annihilation of overmatched Mike Dallas, Jr. which took place in Las Vegas, NV on January 26th. The bout is a compelling match as Peterson is looking to reclaim his position as the best fighter in the division. Peterson is also out to erase the cloud of doubt which was cast over him when he tested positive for high levels of testosterone in the build-up for his later scrapped rematch with Amir Khan. For Matthysse, this is another day at the office as he looks to add another impressive name and victory to his already exceptional resume.
The co-feature should serve as an interesting bout as Devon Alexander(24-1, 13 KO’s) settles into the welterweight division with his 3rd appearance at the weight and first defense as IBF world titlist, set to be tested by Britain’s undefeated Kell Brook(29-0, 19 KO’s) who treks across the pond for only the second time in his professional career. Brook, who is a former British welterweight champ, seeks to remain unbeaten while hoping to make a name for himself stateside.
