On Saturday June 8th at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada – Adonis Stevenson will challenge “Bad” Chad Dawson for his WBC Light Heavyweight title in a 12-round bout. HBO Sports will air the event.
Dawson(31-2, 17 KO’s) will be looking to get back in the win column after his nightmarish dip down to Super Middleweight where he was dropped several times and finally stopped via TKO in 10 rounds by Andre Ward in September of 2012, and successfully defend his belt for the second time. Meanwhile, the Haitian-born Adonis “Superman” Stevenson(20-1, 17 KO’s) is coming off of an avenged sole loss to Darnell Boone. Stevenson repaid Boone for his previous TKO loss by knocking him out in six rounds with a vicious left uppercut that was followed by a stinging straight left that left Boone face-down on the canvas and out. Style-wise, you have two southpaw stance fighters with Chad having a couple of inches of height advantage and 5 years of youth over Stevenson.
In some ways, this is a very dangerous fight for Dawson as Stevenson should all but be viewed as a tune up fight. We have yet to see if the punishment which Ward dished out to Dawson will have everlasting effects on Chad. Will the heavy-handed Stevenson have a coming out party in his biggest shot on the big stage – or will Chad Dawson rise to the occasion and prove his champion pedigree while trashing the notion that he is damaged goods? Those two career defining questions are what will intrigue the boxing mind until the initial bell rings come June 8th.
