…Freshly Ground Plagiarized Grind, Yours Daily…
* According to Ricardo Lois of The Boxing Truth, November’s rumored Nonito-Donaire-Fernando Montiel bout is far from being reality. In a personal phone call with Montiel yesterday, the WBC/WBO bantamweight champ told Lois that Top Rank has had no discussions whatsoever with him or his people regarding a bout with Donaire.
….Deja vu?
* On the other hand, an August 28th jr. flyweight unification bout between WBA champ, Giovanni Segura, and WBO kingpin, Ivan Calderon has apparently been green-lighted. The bout would be held at Coliseo Rubén Rodríguez in Bayamón, Puerto Rico.
…Can we all just agree this, for sure, is a real fight fan’s fight? But I’ll believe it when I see it, probably somewhere during the ring walks.
* Randy Couture, apparently, is not too concerned with James Toney’s boxing style as he prepares for their August 28th bout at UFC 118 in Boston. Couture has not added a single boxer to his team to try and emulate Toney’s style. On the other hand, Toney has been working with some submission/take down heavy hitters and, allegedly, doing better than expected. Regardless, Couture has opened betting as a -575 favorite.
…All I can say is that if Couture loses, Dana White will never hear the end of it. Couture should win because it is his sport, but I think he should face Toney next in a boxing ring…It’s only fair, right?
* Outrage has traveled across the boxing world as a result of the controversial Danny Green-Paul Briggs fight in Perth, Australia yesterday…well, about as much outrage as could be generated by a Green-Briggs bout in Perth, anyway…
The 29-second bout ended when Briggs crumpled to the canvas following a glancing jab to Briggs’ left sideburn. After the bout, with the crowd calling for blood, Green addressed the angry mob and promised to withhold payment to Briggs.
Today, however, the story has changed.
According to the Herald Sun newspaper, Green, at a post, post-fight press conference is now claiming that the punch was legit and that a slowed-down replay of the shot in question convinced him that Briggs wasn’t faking it.
“I caught Briggs on the soft part on the skull on top of the head,” Green told a packed media conference. “I viewed the footage this morning and slowed the footage down to an incredibly slow speed and I’m happy I did that, because you can actually see the blow that lands. To the naked eye it appears it hasn’t … (landed) but this is proof he’s been felled by a legitimate blow to the head and actually a brain stem kind of injury has occurred … it’s almost like a collision. He was legitimately hurt.”
Green also conformed that Briggs would, indeed, be paid in full, about $250,000.
In a poll on Fightnews.com, 89% of all respondents felt that Briggs took a dive.
The IBO, which sanctioned this pretend cruiserweight title fight, is calling for a formal investigation and may consider stripping Green of their pretend belt based on the pretend nature of the pretend title defense.
Ok, then…More Grind Mañana…
