Canadian fighter Adonis Stevenson (16-1, 13 KOs) will face Jesus Gonzalez (27-1, 14 KOs) in a voluntary IBF super middleweight title eliminator. The winner of the bout will earn the second position in the IBF world rankings, which brings with it the possibility of a title bout against top-ranked Lucian Bute.
Stevenson is ranked 8th in the world among super middleweights, and comes into this bout with trainer Emmanuel Steward in his corner. He is a 34-year-old southpaw coming off three consecutive wins, all by way of knockout. His most recent win was over Aaron Pryor Jr., who was ranked 9th in the world among super middleweights at the time. Stevenson’s only loss on record came by TKO 2 in 2010 against Darnell Boone who is now 19-18. Stevenson continues to take on skilled fighters as he tries to prove that loss was a fluke.
Gonzalez is seven years his opponent’s junior, and it’s reported by Box Rec that he’s a switch-hitter in the ring. Since 2008, Gonzalez has fought four times and won all four bouts. His lone loss on record came in 2005 against Jose Luis Zertuche. Gonzalez was knocked down once in round six and twice in round eight, at which point the bout was called. Gonzalez does hold a win over Darnell Boone, the only fighter to come out the victor against his opponent on Saturday.
The fight headlines “The Fast & Furious Boxing Series” that will be held at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec. Co-headlining will be a light heavyweight, eight-round bout featuring a minor titleholder, Eleider Alvarez, against the winner of Oscar de la Hoya’s “The Next Great Champ” reality series, Otis Griffin.
