Nokia Theater, Los Angeles, CA– Rather than a definitive end to a bout that had the potential for greatness, it was an accidental clash of heads and an arterial gash over the eye of Yonnhy Perez (20-2-1, 14KOs) in the fifth round that put an end to a spirited night of prize fighting for both Perez and opponent, Vic Darchinyan (36-3-1, 27KOs) Saturday night.
While it was apparent that “The Raging Bull,” Darchinyan was in full control, shaking Perez several times and scoring a knockdown in the second round, it was also clearly evident that the awkward Armenian was starting to get gassed as he swung wildly at the former bantamweight champ, Perez.
It’s likely that Perez would’ve gone down from the huge shots he was taking, but it would’ve been interesting to see what the fight would’ve looked like had the Colombian managed to survive Darchinyan’s early assault.
Instead, the fight went to the scorecards after the clash of heads and Darchinyan was declared the winner by scores of 50-44 all around. The Boxing Tribune also scored the truncated bout 50-44.
