The buzz around the internet is that the rematch of 2008’s entertaining brawl between Antonio Margarito (38-7, 27 KOs) and Miguel Cotto (36-2, 29 KOs) is pretty much a done deal for December 3 and likely to be held at Madison Square Garden for Cotto’s WBA jr. middleweight title.
Promoter Bob Arum, who represents both fighters, went public with the announcement earlier in the week and Team Margarito jumped on the news, proclaiming doctor’s clearance for their fighter, who suffered severe damage to the orbital bone around his right eye during his one-sided loss to Manny Pacquiao last November. Margarito also had to undergo surgery last month to remove a large cataract from that same eye.
In their first encounter, Antonio Margarito stalked and eventually stopped a battered Miguel Cotto in the eleventh round to issue the Puerto Rican star his first professional loss and take his WBA welterweight title. Margarito’s subsequent hand wrap scandal and license revocation led some to speculate, even among Cotto’s inner circle, that perhaps the Mexican brawler had been using illegal wraps in their fight.
No official confirmation from Cotto has been issued.
