Keyshawn Davis handled Gustavo Lemos with ease last night at The Scope, in Davis’ hometown of Norfolk, Virginia.
In the short, two round lightweight clash, Davis proved that Lemos had absolutely no advantage, and legitimate skill will almost always trump size in a division full of slick, athletic masterminds.
Lemos missed the 135lbs weight limit on Friday, coming in at 141.4lbs, and showing up to the IBF title eliminator at a hefty 155.4lbs.
Early in the first, Lemos looked to make his extra weight impact Davis by throwing soaring hooks and straights, but to no avail.
Fast forward to round two, Lemos was dropped three times. First by a counter straight right thrown with precision, and next, Davis floored Lemos with a vicious left hook that showed his true power — which many lightweights would certainly like to possess.
Lemos, after touching the canvas a second time, stumbled backward before jumping to his feet.
It was clearly all but over, as Davis danced around for joy, and then jumped in for the kill, throwing rocking power shots — hooks and uppercuts — to the head and body, leaving an exclamation point on his already convincing, yet short, performance.
This seemed to be a mental test for Davis, fighting a Lemos who was significantly overweight, perhaps intentionally looking to psych out Davis pre-bout. But, with Davis’ two brothers picking up wins, and fighting in front of his hometown crowd under the lights, Davis rose to the challenge, embracing this moment.
After the fight, Davis told the ESPN ringside reporter he’s seeking a Gervonta “Tank” Davis bout.
”Gervonta, knock knock,” he said.
Whether that fight comes to fruition is an entirely separate discussion to be had.
Davis improved to 12-0 (8 KOs), while Lemos dropped to 29-2 (19 KOs).
