Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol: For Everything

On Saturday, October 12, from Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and live on ESPN+, IBF/WBC/WBO light heavyweight champ Artur Beterbiev (20-0, 20 KOs) meets WBA light heavyweight champ Dmitry Bivol (23-0, 12 KOs) in a long-awaited 175 lb. unification clash.

The Story

Long-awaited and highly-anticipated, this showdown of 175 lb. top dogs is a true best vs. best clash of undefeated reigning champions.

Beterbiev captured his first world title in 2017 when he stopped Enrico Koelling in the twelfth round to win the vacant IBF belt. Two years later, he’d add the WBC belt with a tenth-round TKO of Oleksandr Gvozdyk. In 2022, the Montreal-based Russian won the WBO title in a two-round blowout of Joe Smith Jr.

With a 100% KO rate, Beterbiev has established himself as one of the elite offensive powerhouses in the sport and he hopes to keep that streak of destruction intact with a beatdown of his fellow elite-level world titlist.

Bivol, also a native of Russia, won the WBA interim title versus Felix Valera in 2016. A year later, he’d become full WBA champ and go on to have twelve successful defenses of that belt leading up to this upcoming unification bout. Along the way, he has notched high-water mark victories over the likes of Saul Alvarez, Jean Pascal, Sullivan Barrera, Joe Smith Jr., and Gilberto Ramirez.

Bivol is universally recognized as an expert ring technician and he looks to affirm that reputation this Saturday against his most dangerous opponent to date.

The Stakes

At stake is undisputed four-belt champion status in the light heavyweight division. Beterbiev brings the IBF, WBC, and WBO belts while Bivol puts up his WBA belt The winner may also rightfully claim “best light heavyweight of this era” status.

The Matchup

Beterbiev is a powerhouse of a fighter with two heavy hands and an offensive mindset who works behind a thudding jab. More than “just” a knockout artist, the undefeated three-belt champ has underappreciated nuance behind his power game, utilizing smart positioning and angles to wear opposition down both mentally and physically with a non-stop barrage of heavy-handed shots.

Willing to take a punch to give a punch, Beterbiev has been touched and dropped in the past, but he’s never really been in any significant trouble.

Bivol is clinical and calculated, working smartly behind a sharp jab to pick his opposition apart. His right hand behind that jab is a quick and jarring power punch that wins respect and earns him the ability to control the distance of a fight. The Breakdown

Beterbiev-Bivol is a tough fight to call as both are stellar in the execution of what they do best.

It’s easy to see a scenario where Beterbiev hunts and wears down Bivol with thudding shots that rattle both head and body.

It’s also easy to envision a scenario where Bivol utilizes his hand and foot speed, as well as his boxing ability, to pick Beterbiev apart from the outside en route to victory.

This unification clash, however, may hinge on two factors– Beterbiev’s physical well-being and Bivol’s temperament.

Beterbiev is 39 with significant wear and tear on his body. His recent meniscus rupture, which required surgery and forced this unification bout to be postponed from its original June 1 date, is especially troubling as it could limit his mobility against the quick and mobile Bivol.

The 33-year-old Bivol, meanwhile, has the ability to utilize that edge in speed and mobility to box his way to victory. He also has the temperament to peck away cautiously from a smart distance and win rounds without ever feeling the urge to press the issue by going in for the kill.

Expect Bivol to build up an early lead by boxing behind his quick jab and intelligent movement and then coast the rest of the way, never making any exploitable mistakes that would allow an engagement-minded Beterbiev back into the fight.

Beterbiev may have some moments, especially early in the fight, but he won’t be able to lay enough hands on Bivol to break him down. And then he won’t have the speed or mobility to play catch-up to a Bivol who is just fine cruising smartly through the final rounds to take a unanimous decision.
