Gervonta Davis’ Trainer On Possible Real Reason Vasiliy Lomachenko Fight Talks Ended

Gervonta “Tank” Davis vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko was set to be, maybe, the biggest pay-per-view fight of the year.

Reports had the lightweight battle in serious discussion with Lomachenko’s promoter Bob Arum even tossing out possible fight dates and venues.

But, unfortunately, the Tank-Loma bout was killed before it could even take a breath of real life, with the death blow being delivered by the Ukraine’s Lomachenko, himself.

Lomachenko’s manager Egis Klimas would deliver the bad news via social media statement:

“Loma is not in the mood right now, he doesn’t have the motivation at the moment. He’s taking off, he wants to spend more time with the family. He doesn’t want to do anything till the end of the year.

So he’s definitely not coming to the ring till the end of the year. With Loma, just money is not what motivates him. He doesn’t take anything just because of money. You can offer him millions, tens of millions of dollars – if he doesn’t have motivation, he’s not ready to prepare for the fight.”

Those working Lomachenko damage control talked up the 3-division world champ’s desire to spend time with his family and his ongoing concern over the war effort in his native country.

Gervonta Davis’ trainer, however, has other ideas concerning the cause of Lomachenko’s retreat.

“I wasn’t shocked,” Coach Calvin Ford told ESNEWS, “because in his career he usually be the one who gets the money. It wasn’t enough that he’d want it.”

“I got other reasons,” Ford continued. “We just seen Shakur [Stevenson] and them beefing, is he gonna come back and fight him before the end of the year? That’s the question. He supposed to be on vacation… Shakur’s trying to figure out what he’s gonna do. Everybody’s trying to figure out what they’re gonna do. I know what Tank gonna do – he’s gonna do Tank. When he ready he’s gonna say ‘yo, let’s go.’”

Speculation abounds that Davis’ “yo, let’s go” moment may come November 2.

A recent report has TGB Promotions– a preferred promoter of Premier Boxing Champions (PBC)– reserving the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for that date. That, of course, doesn’t necessarily mean a Tank Davis fight will happen that day (or that any fight will happen that day), but it does give an idea that something might be brewing.

No matter what, though, Tank-Loma is not on anyone’s radar anymore– at least not for now.
