Lawrence Okolie devastated Lukasz Rozanski with a first-round knockout to claim the WBC bridgerweight title last Friday night at the Podpromie Arena in Rzeszow, Poland.
Okolie, towering at 6’5″, made quick work of the fight, sending Rozanski to the canvas three times with his ferocious right hands before the referee mercifully ended the spectacle at 2:55 of the first round. Rozanski, visibly unprepared and out of his league, seemed lost from the first bell.
With surgical precision, Okolie cornered Rozanski and unleashed a straight right that crashed into Rozanski’s temple, flooring him dramatically. Rozanski, while down, feebly pointed to the back of his head, implying a foul. The referee, unswayed, counted it a legitimate knockdown.
It’s hard to tell if Rozanski genuinely believed he was fouled or if he was simply scrambling for a pause to gather his scattered senses. Regardless, Okolie’s relentless barrage made any such distinction irrelevant. The end was written in Rozanski’s shaky attempts to withstand the onslaught.
The knockout blow, a ruthless right uppercut from Okolie, toppled Rozanski like a bowling pin in a strike—a sight both pitiful and decisive. Rozanski’s attempt to regain his footing was feeble; he staggered, swayed, and ultimately, the fight was called off. Continuing the fight would have been less a sport and more a spectacle of cruelty.
Okolie’s dominating performance was a stark reminder of the gulf between true contenders and those unprepared for the limelight. With this victory, Okolie not only captured the title but perhaps opened the door to more challenging and rewarding fights in the heavyweight ranks, leaving the less competitive bridgerweight division—and Rozanski—behind.
