As things turned out, Shane Mosley Jr. picked the perfect time to register the highest profile victory of his 10-year professional career this past July versus Daniel Jacobs.
The 33-year-old Mosley has now officially declared himself a promotional free agent, ending his ties to Golden Boy Promotions.
The second generation star is ranked in the top 10 at middleweight by all four recognized sanctioning bodies. He currently sits as the WBA’s no. 1 160 lb. contender, behind reigning world titlist Erislandy Lara, who will defend against Danny Garcia this coming September 14 on the Canelo Alvarez-Edgar Berlanga undercard.
“I want to thank Golden Boy Promotions for everything they’ve done for me over the years,” Mosley Jr. stated via pres release. “They’ve been instrumental in getting me to where I am today, and I’m excited for what the future holds as a free agent.”
“I’ll be watching the Erislandy Lara vs. Danny Garcia fight very closely,” he continued. “I want the winner, but I’m ready for any of the champions at 160 pounds. I’ve worked hard to get here, and now it’s time to take advantage of all that hard work.”
Mosley Jr.’s career has been uneven over the course his professional run with some very flat performances, especially early in his career, that raised questions as to whether he was truly invested in becoming a main stage boxer. In recent performances, however, the son of Hall of Famer Shane Mosley has looked sharper and more consistent.

His latest showing against Jacobs, at the super middleweight limit, demonstrated that Mosley has, for what it’s worth, reached the height of his ability and skill level.
“Shane is in an incredible position right now,” said Mike Leanardi, manager and CEO of Victory Sports Ent., via press release. “As a top contender in all sanctioning bodies, we have a lot of options on the table. Our goal is to secure the biggest fights possible and bring Shane a world title opportunity in the near future.”
Mosley Jr. (22-4, 12 KOs) will be viewed as a favorable risk vs. reward opponent based on the marketability of his famous name and the perceived limitations he has in the ring. And, given that he can compete at both 160 and 168, his team will likely be getting many calls from A-sides looking for a bankable and beatable B-side.
The winner of the upcoming Lara-Garcia title bout will most likely be calling Team Mosley next, but there should be many other options coming Mosley’s way, including a long shot hope of landing a Canelo Alvarez bout in the near future.
The Mexican star beat Mosley’s father via unanimous decision back in 2012.
