I give this Hump Day Grind to you…

* Former Heavyweight champ, Larry Holmes, will participate in an exhibition bout against former Super Featherweight champ, Azumah Nelson, in Ghana as part of a 5-day cultural visit to promote tourism to the African nation. Holmes will also hold a boxing clinic in the Accra Sports Stadium as well as help launch the Larry Holmes Boxing Museum.

* Duluth, Minnestoa boxing promoter, Chuck Horton, was suspended for 6 months and fined $5,000 for a series of exhibition fights he promoted on June 17th at Grandma’s Sports Garden. The punishment was handed out by the Minnesota Combative Sports Commission in response to Horton holding a boxing card, featuring Andy Kolle and Matt Vanda, which was not officially sanctioned by the commission. The card was billed as an exhibition with Kolle and Vanda wearing 16 ounce gloves and agreeing to not have the result count on their records, but a Minnesota statute says that any bout where fighters are being paid and an audience is being charged cannot be considered an exhibition. Aside from Horton’s suspension and fine, referee Bobby Brunette received a 6-month suspension and $300 fine for taking part in the event and all of the fighters on the card received 90-day suspensions and $500 fines with their respective cornermen being suspended for 6 months and fined $1,000.

* So that a statue to honor the late Davey Moore can be bronzed, a fundraising reception will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 26, in the Interface Rotating Gallery at the Springfield Museum of Art in Springfield, OH. Moore, a Springfield native, was a four-time Golden Gloves champion and 1952 Olympian. He won his first professional world title in 1959 by by beating Hogan “Kid” Bassey. Moore died in 1963 due to an injury sustained in a bout with Sugar Ramos at Dodger Stadium where his head violently struck the bottom rope after a knockdown, causing deadly brain trauma. Memorabilia from Moore’s career will be on display and proceeds from the $20 tickets, sold at the door, will go toward finishing the statue destined for the Gateway Park.

* Saul “El Canelo” Alvarez may fight Matthew Hatton on the undercard of a proposed Shane Mosley-Sergio Mora pay per view in Los Angeles on September 18th.

More Grind, Mañana…
