Former middleweight champion, William Joppy, will take the place of Juergen Braehmer against Beibut Shumenov (10-1, 6 KOs) this Saturday in Kazakhstan.
Joppy (39-6-2, 30 KOs), who was on the undercard and set to face light heavyweight prospect, Gayrat Ahmedov, will step up in a last minute WBA light heavyweight title bout to replace WBO champ, Braehmer, who abruptly left Kazakhstan Tuesday, citing illness.
The 40-year old Joppy hasn’t won a bout since November, 2007 and, in his last encounter, was held to a draw in a super middleweight bout with Cory Cummings in Virginia.
This will be the second title defense of the WBA title Shumenov won from Gabriel Campillo in January of last year.
