Chavez Jr. challenges Zbik for WBC middleweight crown, Saturday June 4

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (42-0-1, 30 KO) and newly-promoted WBC middleweight champion Sebastian Zbik (30-0, 10 KO) will square off Saturday June 4, 2010, in the main event of HBO’s World Championship Boxing. Zbik’s WBC middleweight crown will be on the line when the two undefeated pugilists meet in the ring at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

Zbik lacks notable world class experience, and will be fighting away from his native country of Germany for only the 5th time in his career, and first since 2005. Prior to being promoted to world champion in January, Zbik held the WBC’s Interim title following a 2009 victory over Italy’s Domenico Spada.

Chavez has been brought along slowly in his legendary father’s large footsteps since he turned pro in 2003. After lackluster performance against Luciano Cuello in 2009, Chavez had an uninspired unanimous decision win over Troy Rowland changed to a no-contest, following a positive test for Furosemide, a banned diuretic. Chavez rebounded in his only appearance of 2010 with a stellar outing against Ireland’s John Duddy. In his last bout, Chavez defeated journeyman Billy Lyell in a tune up.
