Former heavyweight title contender Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson (25-1-1, 11 KOs) takes on Alex Leapai (25-3-3, 20 KOs) on Sunday, April 1, at the Doomben Racecourse in Ascot, Queensland, Australia, in a 12-round bout.
Known as a slick type of boxer, Johnson might be most famous for no-showing in his heavily-hyped 2009 heavyweight title fight with long-time WBC heavyweight champion, Vitali Klitschko. While Klitschko stalked Johnson over twelve rounds, he spent the entire fight moving and slipping punches and never opened up offensively. Johnson has won three straight against club-level opposition since the loss to Klitschko. The combined records of Johnson’s opponents over that stretch are 51-56-4. With a win Johnson will pick up a regional IBF title and more favorable ranking within the IBF, where Vitali’s younger brother Wladimir holds the title.
Little is known of Alex Leapai, who resides in Logan City in Queensland, Australia by way of the island of Samoa. Leapai has fought all but one of his professional fights in Australia, and has recorded wins over Owen Beck, Travis Walker, and Darnell Wilson.
