Rugged veteran Humberto “La Zorrita” Soto (58-7-2, 34 KOs) and Argentinean slugger, Lucas Martin Matthysse (30-2, 28 KOs) will face off in a WBC semi-final title eliminator on Saturday, June 23 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. This 12-round jr. welterweight fight will be the co-feature to the main event featuring Victor Ortiz and Josesito Lopez on Showtime Championship Boxing.

Soto, the three-time world champion over two weight divisions, is looking to move towards a title shot in a third division after title reigns in the super featherweight and lightweight divisions. Soto’s time as WBC lightweight champion was less than stellar. Four of his five title defenses came against journeymen and past-their-prime former regional belt holders. His biggest win as a lightweight was a December 2010 unanimous decision win over Urbano Antillon. Soto last fought in April, taking a unanimous decision win over Brazilian opponent, Claudinei Lacerda.

Matthysse, of Junin, Buenos Aires, Argentina, will be returning to the United States for the first time since last June’s controversial split decision loss to Devon Alexander. It was the second controversial decision loss on American soil for Matthysse, the first being a 2010 split decision loss to Zab Judah with potential WBO and IBF title shots on the line. Matthysse’s last two fights have taken place in Argentina, with each fight ending before the scheduled ten rounds.
