Newly-crowned WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (39-4, 28 KOs) will defend his title against Nikolay Sjekloca (26-1, 8 KOs), on Saturday, May 3. The fight will reportedly take place at the Velodrom in Berlin, Germany.
Abraham is now a three-time world titleholder. Abraham held the IBF middleweight title between 2005 and 2009 before moving up in weight to participate in Showtime’s Super Six Super Middleweight Tournament. Abraham failed to live up to the early hype surrounding his presence in the tournament and made an early exit. Since then, Abraham has won several fights against lackluster opposition, but has squeezed in two wins – both title winning efforts – over Robert Stieglitz.
Sjekloca, fresh off last August’s win over Misa Nikolic (17-20-1), makes a surprise appearance in the WBO’s rankings at the number 9 spot. Prior to his two-round blowout of Nikolic, Sjekloca lost a wide points decision to Sakio Bika in a WBC title eliminator bout.
