A round-up of some of the smaller stories circulating the boxing industry:
* 24-year-old UK welterweight prospect, Kell Brook (23-0, 16 KOs) is no longer working under the Frank Warren promotional banner. According to sources, Brook will be entering into a deal with UK-based Matchroom Sports, the promotional company that also promotes London’s middleweight contender, Darren Barker.
* According to various sources, former heavyweight champ, Hasim Rahman has killed his widely-rumored bout with prospect, Tyson Fury over an unwillingness to travel overseas.
* New sanctioning body, the Independent Boxing Syndicate (IBS) will have its first sanctioned bout, a US National Heavyweight Title Fight between Travis Walker (35-6-1, 28 KOs) and Alonzo Butler (28-1-1, 21 KOs) on May 14th in Atlanta Georgia
* Heavyweight brawler, Tony Grano (17-2-1, 13 KOs) will be taking on journeyman, Dominque Alexander (20-10-1, 10 KOs) at “The Willie Pep Boxing Classic,” presented by Hard Hittin’ Promotions (“HHP”), at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford this Saturday, April 9th.
On the same card is a one-of-a-kind “Wheelchair Boxing Match” pitting Ian Cannon, an 18-year-old college student with cerebral palsy, against former New England Golden Gloves champion, Luis Reynoso, of Springfield, MA. The three-round exhibition will be regulated under amateur boxing rules (headgear, large gloves, etc.)
* Also this Saturday, George Foreman III (11-0, 10 KOs) headlines a local card against Eric Lindsey (3-10, 1 KO) in a scheduled six-rounder at the Hampton Roads Convention Center in Hampton, Virginia. Father, George Sr., who trains his son, will also be at the show.
