Gervonta Davis vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko is, Apparently, a “Thing”

Apparently, it’s more than just a social media rumor. Gervonta “Tank” Davis vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko appears to be a “thing.” At least, enough of a “thing” to warrant initial talks and meetings with both sides of the big fight.

In an interview with Fights ATW, Lomachenko’s promoter Bob Arum mentioned November as a possible target date for the lightweight contest with either the MGM Grand or T-Mobile Arena playing host to the event. In an interview with FightHype.com, Arum said that Lomachenko is coming to the States this coming Monday for an initial sitdown meeting with Arum and manager Egis Klimas to discuss certain logistics related to making the fight.

That’s not exactly “close to becoming official,” as some media outlets have put it. But it’s something. Tank-Loma is a “thing.”

Of course, in this sport, most everyone is riding an agenda and even a highly-anticipated fight like this, one which was listed on more than a few media “dream fight” lists not too long ago, will be spun and spun to suit whatever story the spinner wants to tell.

At 36, is Lomachenko too old for the 29-year-old Tank now? He will be…or not…depending on who’s doing the analysis.

Lomachenko is not the same fighter he was in 2016-2017, when he was considered to be, arguably, in his absolute prime. Well, during that time, Davis had just become a 10-round fighter, taking on the likes of fighting Guillermo Avila Godinez and Mario Antonio Macias. Barring access to a time machine, there was never going to be a prime vs. prime between the two.

No, the timing’s not perfect. But if anyone is making the case that Lomachenko is not, still, a Top 3 lightweight or possibly even a Top 2, they should be sent to boxing fandom Special Ed. Loma’s coming off a TKO of George Kambosos Jr. and what many believe should’ve been a win over Devin Haney. He’s a different fighter than what he used to be– more deliberate, more calculated– but he’s absolutely top-notch nonetheless.

Gervonta Davis vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko is a great fight, an important fight, and the winner should get full credit for the win…even if we know he won’t.

Trainer Robert Garcia:

“That’ll be a bad-ass fight…I love Lomachenko…At this point, I think Tank’s just too strong because he’s a lot younger. Maybe, Loma, we’ve probably seen the best out of him, but I love Loma. Five years ago, I would’ve picked Loma, easy…I go with Tank, but I wouldn’t be surprised, I love Loma, I love his style. He’s one of my favorite fighters. I would love to see him pull it off, too…It’s possible.”

Teofimo Lopez (who decisioned Lomachenko in 2020):

“Tank and his team are going after that because they follow the Mayweather route. The road is ‘get him when you know you’re gonna win the fight.’ So, I’m gonna follow the script on that and say Tank will win…I think it’s a tricky fight…Loma’s not easy at all…He’s never gonna face, whether it’s sparring or whatnot…someone like Vasiliy Lomachenko. I promise you that. I’m telling you from first-hand. He’ll understand that when he gets in the ring with him.”

Shawn Porter:

“This Loma can still beat a Tank or a Shakur just because of how intelligent he is.

I think the fight now, I think it’s evenly matched but I would tend to lean towards Tank Davis at this point because everything I’ve seen Tank do and, not only that, I feel like he’s got the experience now to go up against Lomachenko.”
