The WBO just announced it’s decision to have their two highest ranked middleweight contenders fight for the title that became vacant when the organization stripped Sergio Martinez last month.
So, #1 ranked Russian, Dmitry Pirog (16-0, 13 KOs) will be taking on #2 ranked American, Danny Jacobs (20-0, 17 KOs) for the belt.
The bout is scheduled for July 31st in Las Vegas, on the Juan Manuel Marquez-Juan Diaz II undercard.
Pirog’s biggest wins to date have been against American Eric Mitchell and Ghana’s Kofi Jantuah; Jacob’s best wins have come against Ishe Smith and Michael Walker.
Sergio Martinez was stripped of the WBO version of the middleweight title when he refused to acknowledge the organization’s request to vacate the WBC jr. middleweight title that he also holds. Martinez still holds the WBC 160 lb. title and is the recognized lineal champ of that division.
