Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California (ESPN Friday Night Fights)– Chris Arreola (29-2, 25 KOs) was victorious in his first bout following his loss at the hands of Tomasz Adamek in April, but it was nowhere near the exciting showcase that most expected.
Facing former sparring partner, Manuel Quezada (29-6, 18 KOs), Arreola immediately established himself as the better fighter of the two by working behind a solid 1-2, but was never able to establish any sort of dominance. Quezada, on his part, punched sluggishly and was simply nowhere near strong enough to hurt Arreola.
Both fighters established an impressive work rate throughout the twelve rounder, but there were few real highlights and just a handful of meaningful punches sprinkled over the full twelve. Quezada would go down twice in the ninth and once in the twelfth.
Scores were 117-108, 118-107, 118-107 in favor of Arreola. The Boxing Tribune had it scored 119-106, also for Arreola.
The televised opener pitted Josesito Lopez (27-3, 15 KOs) against Marvin Cordova (21-2-1, 11 KOs) in a well-booked, entertaining eight rounder with plenty of back and forth action.
Cordova was deducted a point for a low blow by referee Pat Russell in the eighth, but it wouldn’t play a role in the final scoring of the bout. Judges’ scorecards were: 77-74, 78-73, 78-73, all for Lopez. The Boxing Tribune also had it scored 77-74 for Lopez.
Prior to the televised card, former US Olympian, Shawn Estrada (8-0, 8 KOs) flattened Alex Armenta (7-2, 6 KOs) in 57 seconds.
