The Weekly Weigh-In

We start off a slow week in Boxing with a GBP show on Fox sports featuring the new Oscar De La Hoya, Frankie Gomez. Frankie will be looking at continuing his early KO record in what is really an overblown sparring session.

The card if full of unbeaten young prospects. The way GBP continue to fail with developing the stars of the future, we all know one of these are bound to lose.

Lucas Matthysse returns on Friday. He will headline an HBO card in Argentina, facing a tomato can. Why this in on HBO is beyond me.

We stay in Argentina for Saturday’s card, headlined by Marcos Maidana. Matthysse on HBO, Maidana non-televised? If anyone can work out what goes on in the TV executives’ heads when they plan the TV schedule, please drop me a line.

On the undercard, our favourite pillow puncher, Cesar Cuenca, returns. How can a fighter with 31 wins still be fighting 8 rounders ? At least the guy he is facing is unbeaten for what that’s worth.

Nery Saguilian hopes to continue his charge up the super featherweight rankings when he takes on Alexander Monterrosa. Keep an eye out for Saguilian, he could be on your TV very soon.

Ray “boom boom” Bautista returns against Alejandro Barrera in what amounts to a stay busy fight. This should be an entertaining card in the Philippines.

The main fight this weekend is, of course, the bout between Giovanni Segura and Ivan Calderon. This bout has been labeled Violence vs. Science and that’s exactly how this will play out. A few years ago this would have been nothing but another points win for Calderon. But we have all seen Calderon slip a little lately(at his age, its hard not to) and that’s what makes this fight so exciting. Can Calderon box his way to a decision? can Segura get inside and be the first man to beat Calderon? We will find out Saturday.

We wrap this weeks weigh-in up with a trip to the Ukraine on Monday for what appears to be a stacked card. The headline act sees Viacheslav Senchenko defend the WBA title against Charlie Navarro. Just remember that this is only a title bout because Mayweather refused to pay the sanctioning fee for the silly alphabet title.

That’s it for this week… cya next time.
