According to The Las Vegas Review Journal, former jr. featherweight and super featherweight champ, Joan Guzman, tested positive for Furosemide, a banned substance by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), for his December 11th bout with Jason Davis.
Furosemide is a diuretic, but also used as a masking agent for other drugs. Most recently, high-profile fighters such as Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and former Guzman rival, Ali Funeka, have served suspensions for the banned substance.
Guzman, who has had recent battles with making weight, still came into the Davis bout more than four pounds above the agreed-upon jr. welterweight limit.
Sanctions will be discussed during the NSAC’s next scheduled meeting, but a fine and suspension are likely. Chavez Jr. and Funeka served suspensions of seven and nine months, respectively.
