Centro de Usos Multiples, Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico– In his home state, Hernan “Tyson” Marquez (31-2, 24 KOs) made the first defense of his WBA flyweight title by stopping Filipino challenger, Edrin Dapudong (22-4, 13 KOs) in three rounds.

Marquez’s heavy hands won Dapudong’s respect early and made for an easy night, with no real, sustained offense coming from the challenger.

In the third, Marquez closed the gap and landed with a sharp left hook that dropped his opponent. Dapudong beat the count but indicated that he was no longer able to continue.

On the undercard:

Why was 31-year-old, Federico Catubay (26-19-3, 13 KOs) fighting for something called the WBO Youth super flyweight title?

Catubay may have been the more experienced fighter, but it was Mexico’s 21-year-old Daniel Rosas (12-0, 9 KOs) with the drive to win the contest via sixth round stoppage. Rosas was up on the scorecards and mostly controlling the action when a crushing right uppercut sent Catubay against the ropes. Half bent over and nearly turning his back on Rosas, the Filipino veteran was all but helpless and absorbing big shots until the ref finally waved off the bout.
