Lenny Zappavigna (25-, 17 KOs) will make his return to the ring against gatekeeper Ameth Diaz (29-1, 20 KOs), Friday August 5, from The Melbourne Pavilion in Flemington, Victoria, Australia. The fight is a scheduled 12-round bout. The winner will be in line to challenge IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez.
Zappavigna, ranked number 5 by the IBF, knocked out Ji Hoon Kim in one round last October to earn a shot at the IBF lightweight title. His shot came in March, when he challenged IBF lightweight titlist Miguel Vazquez. The brawler from Australia who dons a rat tail and hair style similar to his idol, Kostya Tszyu, came up short, losing by scores of 118-110 (twice) and 117-111. Zappavigna is looking for a second chance at a world title with a win over the well traveled Diaz.
Diaz, ranked number 8 by the IBF is looking to get past Zappavigna on his way to a possible first shot at a world title. He last fought in February, knocking out Eric Castro in 4 rounds. Diaz has lost to contender Souleymane M’baye, Joan Guzman, and Ji Hoon Kim, in previous title eliminator bouts.
